Hosokawa Micron Videos

Carbon Black is a substance that is used in the manufacturing of many common petroleum-based items, such as tires, pigments, paints, plastics, and more. Carbon gas is created through the incomplete combustion of many petroleum-based products, such as tar. However, carbon black’s production process has a tendency to leave behind a lot of grit in the carbon black. Hosokawa Micron Power Systems has many applications capable of classifying and grinding down the grit, resulting in the production of carbon black. These applications include:

Mikro Pulverizer Hammer and Screen Mill

The Mikro Pulverizer Hammer and screen mill is a mechanical impact mill which uses a static screen to control particle size. It is capable of grinding a wide array of materials down to D90 = 40 µm. In the production of carbon black, the Mikro Pulverizer grinds down the particles, creating finer particle sizes and reducing the carbon black’s grit.

Mikro ACM Air Classifying Mill

The Mikro ACM Air Classifying Mill is an air-swept mechanical impact mill that uses an air classifier to grind and classify in one simple step. It is capable of processing a wide array of materials down to D97 = 20 µm. In the production of Carbon Black, the Mikro ACM reduces the carbon black’s particle size, resulting in a lower grit size.

Vertical Long-Gap Mill

The Vertical Long-Gap Mill is a grinding mill with an air classifier, and a specialized grinding chamber. This grinding chamber has a small space between the hammer assembly and the multiple deflector liner. This gives the mill its “vertical long-gap” name. The Vertical Long Gap Mill grinds and classifies the carbon black, reducing its grit in a similar matter to the Mikro ACM.

Mikro e-ACM Enhanced Air Classifying Mill

The Mikro e-ACM is an improved version of the Mikro ACM. It is improved so that it has a better capability to process carbon black. The way it is improved is through the addition of a venturi, which helps to draw out the coarse particles from the grinding chamber. This assists with the processing of carbon black by enhancing circulation so that the coarse materials can better flow out of the chamber and then back in to be reprocessed.

The Mikro Air Jet Sieve™ MAJSx is a highly accurate and reliable particle size analyzer designed for identifying the particle size distribution of dry powder ranging from 20 µm / # 635 (mesh) to 4,750 µm / # 4 (mesh). It is designed for use in the chemical, mineral, pharmaceutical, and food industries. An on-board computer enables the operator to flow through the process. This video briefly discusses how particle size analysis is conducted.

Sieving Principle

The Mikro Air Jet Sieve™ MAJSx utilizes test sieve screens and the pneumatic sieving principle to enhance the accuracy and reproducibility of particle size analysis. Use of this method has become a preferred standard for such tasks as quality assurance of incoming raw materials, process control, and the verification of final product specifications. While under negative pressure, a positive upward air flow is emitted from the rotating slit wand, continuously dispersing particles across the surface of a test sieve screen. The particles finer then the opening of the test sieve screen will pass through and are carried away from the sample, leaving the coarse particles larger than the sieve opening retained on the test sieve screen.

Precise determination of particle size within the range of 20 to 4,750 µm can quickly be determined. This unique rotating wand method also reduces, and in many cases, eliminates the need for tapping or brushing, enhancing the analysis reproducibility. The overall system is designed for cleaner operation and requires less counter space than other types of analytical equipment.

Operating Parameters

Four key operating parameters need to be consistent to produce repeatable and reliable results.

Sieving Time – Excessive sieving time can lead to particle degradation due to attrition. In most dry powder applications, Hosokawa recommends a sieving time cycle of two minutes. This provides ample time for the particles of the entire sample to pass through the sieve screen or be retained.

Sieving Vacuum Pressure – Hosokawa recommends a sieving pressure between 8-16 inches of water column during a sieve analysis. If the pressure is too low, the air velocity passing through the rotating wand may not evenly disperse the entire sample. If the pressure is too high, the air velocity could generate enough force to further grind material as the sample repeatedly impacts the sieve screen and sieve cover.

Sample Volume – In most air jet sieve particle size analysis devices, a sample between 10 grams to 100 grams is recommended, depending on the density of the material being tested. Samples larger than 100 grams can blind the test sieve screen and affect the analysis results.
Test Sieve Screen Quality – The integrity of a test sieve screen is critical in any particle size analysis. Hosokawa only provides test sieve screens that are 99% accurate. Those with any damage such as holes, tears, scratches, waves, or other imperfections are not recommended. Sieve screens should be re-certified as recommended by the manufacturer on a routine basis.

Particle Size Analysis with the New Mikro Air Jet Sieve

Firing Industries Ltd August 12, 2014 5:10 pm

The Mikro Pulverizer® Hammer and Screen Mill is a high-speed mechanical impact mill designed for continuous size reduction of a wide range of materials down to D90 = 45 μm. This device has evolved into the preeminent industrial mill with thousands of worldwide installations. Our educational video reveals the key features and how it works.

Features and Benefits

The Mikro Pulverizer® consists of a high-speed rotor assembly fitted with hammers. The grinding chamber is fitted with a cover containing a multiple deflector liner and a retaining screen at the point of mill discharge. A screw mechanism is often used to introduce feed material into the grinding chamber. The grinding process is affected by three basic variables: the type of hammers, the rotor speed, and the size and shape of the screen opening.

There are two types of hammers: the “stirrup,” recommended where a fine particle size is desired; and the “bar,” which generates a coarser grind with a minimum of fines. Both types are tipped at the wearing edge with various abrasion-resistant alloys. Rotor speed affects the fineness of the grind as follows: low speeds result in a coarse grind and high speeds produce a fine grind. Size and shape of the retaining screen openings also affect the product. In general, a finer screen opening will result in a finer grind. The retaining screen does not function as a sifting screen, except in coarse granulations.

Controlled Particle Size

Optimum particle size reduction can greatly affect chemical reaction speeds, solubility, weight, color, volume, appearance, and strength of ground products. Mikro-Pulverizers® provide accuracy in particle size control because the grinding action is entirely mechanical. Once a mill is set to deliver a certain product, it will continue to produce exactly the same result without adjustment.

Grind, Blend, and Disperse

Mikro Pulverizers® grind, blend and disperse in a single operation. Intensive action thoroughly mixes dissimilar ingredients into a finished product. Heat-sensitive materials are handled by adjustment of mill speed, hammers, screen, and discharge air relief, as well as with pneumatic conveying. Conditioned air may be bled into a grinding chamber, or the feed may be pre-conditioned or chilled.

Mikro Pulverizers® come in many model sizes from small Laboratory (1 HP) models to production (200 HP) versions. They can process 250-gram batches up to 15 tons/hour. Various configurations are available to produce a wide range of products for the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, mineral, and cosmetic industries.

Mikro Pulverizer Hammer & Screen Mill Demonstration

Firing Industries Ltd May 27, 2015 1:26 pm

The Micron Labomixer is a laboratory scale conical screw mixer designed to gently mix dry powders and liquid additives in batches up to 2.5 liters. Its operation is similar to the well-known Vrieco-Nauta Conical Screw Mixer using a rotating screw along the inner wall of the revolving inverted cone type mixer. The small-batch unit is suitable for chemicals, minerals, foods, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and cosmetics.

The video describes many of the key features of the Labomixer which is based on the Vrieco-Nauta Conical Screw Mixer principle. The Vrieco-Nauta mixer works by creating convection current inside the batch of material that thoroughly and gently moves the material. The auger pulls material up and deposits it higher in the batch. The location of the auger is changed by the orbital arm which moves the auger at a relatively slow speed around the periphery of the mixer.

Simple and efficient operation

Operation of the Labomixer is simple and mixing is fast and efficient. The mixing bowl has a 2.5-L capacity and it mixes effectively at 30% of volume. The bowl rotates at 4 rpm and the mixing screw is variable between 100 and 200 rpm. Both the bowl and screw are made of stainless steel 304. During operation, the Labomixer has a safety mechanism that disengages the bowl and screw if the doors open.

The video describes the few steps that are required for disassembly so material can be discharged or recharged. The compact design is maintenance-free, requires no lubrication, and is well suited for laboratory environments. The simple design is ideal for easy cleaning.
