Most industrial engineers associate triboelectric detection with emissions control. And it’s a powerful tool for improving baghouse efficiency in a number of ways.
It’s less commonly recognized as a process management tool for flow control. Typically it’s used as a flow/no flow detector.
There’s another capability of triboelectric that’s often overlooked – and it’s a simple and effective solution for some very challenging process control applications.
Triboelectric detection can measure particle velocity – and unlike other velocity monitors which can’t perform in a dusty air stream, this is actual particle velocity, not just air velocity.
That capability opens up a wide new range of process control insights for any process which moves particles, or non-conductive liquids through a tube or pipe.
The most obvious is a range of applications around product damage. For instance, it’s now possible to optimize the conveying speed of easily broken product by measuring the particle velocity. It’s also possible to observe velocity of a process where the impact of product buildup can reduce product flow – and even identify where in a system the buildup is occurring for quick proactive maintenance.
We also see applications with abrasive products which can be efficiently ml oved at a certain rate without excessive wear on components – but increase that speed and wear & tear dramatically increase maintenance costs.
