What a typical pneumatic dense phase conveying system looks like, showcasing ProPhase, from Schenck Process.

Dense phase pneumatic conveying is a process used in many bulk material handling industries. It allows for the movement of materials through pipelines from one silo to the next.

Using high pressure and low gas volumes, dense phase conveyors efficiently push material along the bottom of an enclosed pipeline, in a slug-like manner. This form of pneumatic conveying, in comparison to lean phase, ensures there is no degrading of material and as such, lower wear on the system.

Dense Phase Conveyors, using ProPhase:

The ProPhase system has been designed to have minimal moving parts, low wear, low maintenance, low attrition of material and high availability, and modular design for a quick supply.

Material movement

The material forms plugs naturally in the pipeline. Some materials form very long plugs, which can stop moving and have to be split, to keep the material flowing, while others form short plugs and move easily through the system. Schenck Process have studied thousands of materials and through experience and testing, are capable of engineering an optimal, economical method to dense phase convey material.

The material itself is held within vessels, silos or in the pipeline at all times, making the system environmentally sound and dust-free friendly. When the materials are considered to be dangerous, the pipeline can be made into a double skin unit with pressure monitoring, indicating if there is wear and allowing planned maintenance to occur.

Pumps and vessels

ProPhase can be provided with modular capabilities, for numerous handling modes, however there are two specific pumps shown as part of this system in the animation, for illustrative purposes only – the standard ProPhase Pump on the left, which is used for most materials and distances and later in the animation, the ProPhase Econ Pump. Whether it is modular design or pump specific, will dependant on the material being conveyed.

The ProPhase Econ Pump is shown on the right, towards the end of the animation. It is suitable for fine fluidisable materials over short distances up to 100m. It is a much simpler pump; it delivers simple high value with straightforward systems. Other pumps are available, material dependant.

The ProPhase pumps have minimal moving parts, the valves only, with no motors. The conveying velocities are the lowest at which the system is repeatedly reliable.

Dome valves

The key part of the Schenck Process dense phase conveying system are the ProDV Dome Valves. The ProDV Dome Valves were designed by our team in 1974 and are now used as the standard go to valve in the bulk material handling industry. The standard ProPhase Pump comes with an isolation valve for simple maintenance. Schenck Process are proudly the original designer, manufacturer of the Dome Valve, which has seen thousands of installations, worldwide. Other replicas now exist in the market; however, the ProDV Dome Valve from Schenck Process comes with a strong history of reliability.

Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying from Schenck Process , are an effective, simple and highly reliable solution for handling Powders and Fly Ash. This video shows the Multi PD Dense Phase Pumps in use.

They incorporates a Dome Valve, which is the only moving part in the vessel; ensuring the system’s reliability and low maintenance operation.

The pumps move the fly ash or powder, from ESPs or from bag filters and can be used to convey directly to the main silos without using an intermediate hopper. There can be up to 8 pumps connected on the same pipeline with an ESP.

The Multi PD pump system is able to convey distances up to 750m, at rates of upto 200 tph – thereby at higher conveying velocities than with the standard Multi Dense Phase vessels. The Multi PD system also has lower specific air consumption and uses smaller pipe sizes to achieve the same conveying rate compared with a standard Multi Dense Phase system.

Available from Schenck Process, Dense Phase and Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying are two types of methods, used for moving materials, by combining air and pressure within an enclosed pipe.

In its very basic form, the key ‘visual’ difference between the two conveying types, is how the material moves. During Dense Phase Conveying, the material moves along the bottom of the pipe gently, while during Dilute conveying, the material moves, whilst being suspended in the air.

Dense Conveying:

Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying uses high pressure and low gas volumes, to efficiently push materials along the bottom of an enclosed pipeline, in a plug form, at relatively low velocities. This means minimal wear on pipes and bends, allowing for minimum maintenance and long life.

Efficient use of compressed air also gives low power consumption and operating costs. It is suitable for transporting difficult, abrasive or friable materials.

Dilute Conveying:

Dilute Phase Pneumatic Conveying uses high gas velocities at low pressures – the exact opposite to Dense Phase. The volume of conveying gas and velocity is what keeps the transported material in suspension. Consequently, the material is being conveyed at a continuous rate and does not accumulate on the bottom of the conveying line.

Dilute phase pneumatic conveying is ideal for transporting a wide range of dry bulk materials in a simple and cost effective manner. Materials are fed into the high velocity gas stream by use of rotary airlock valves.

Although the upfront costs to install this system may be more cost effective than a Dense Phase Conveyor, the use of dilute phase for abrasive products often results in wear and tear on the conveying line and bends. This will eventually lead to more maintenance – in comparison.

Demonstrates how a Diverter Valve for Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying works – a variant of the Dome Valve and as part of a ProPhase conveyor system – from Schenck Process.

The dense phase pneumatic conveying diverter valve shown in the conveying line is a ProDV Dome Switch/Divert Valve. It uses two or more ProDV Valves with a fabrication. The first valve shown in the animation is a diverging valve the material from one source being diverted to two or more delivery points. The second divert valve is a converging valve this takes two sources and connect them to one destination. The principal is to route pipes to a number of delivery points.

The design of the valve incorporates our unique inflatable sealing mechanism allows for low maintenance, the seals usually need checking yearly, its seal gives positive cut-off functionality.

Reliable Plastic Compounding Solutions. The requirements of modern standard plastics are becoming increasingly complex. In order to satisfy very high quality standards, depending on the particular application, they are enriched with a wide variety of additives such as PE, PP, PA, ABS and SAN.

Mixing takes place during a highly viscous melting phase and is only possible using specially coordinated mixing tools. The flow rates in the compounder range between several 100kg/hr up to 10t/hr.

Short-term feeding consistency for example is critical for extruders with speeds of up to 1200rpm — it must be very good while the product resides in the compounder.

All in all, processing plastic requires extremely flexible compounding and feeding solutions suited for even complex applications. Schenck Process provides the perfect solution.
